A mattress is one of the worst things to send to landfill — it's bulky, it's mostly air, and it doesn't compact. That's why dedicated mattress recycling exists. At a licensed facility the outer cover is slit and peeled off, then the layers are separated by material: the steel spring unit is pulled out and sent for scrap metal reprocessing, the foam layers are shredded and reprocessed into carpet underlay, matting and packaging, and the felt, wadding and fibre layers are baled for reuse. Timber from divan bases goes for chipping. Whatever genuinely can't be separated is sent for energy recovery rather than tipped.

Everything we collect in Birmingham goes to a licensed transfer station in the West Midlands and is sorted there — around 95% of what we lift across all our jobs is diverted from landfill. You get a waste transfer note emailed the same day, with our Environment Agency upper-tier registration (CBDU486387) on it, so you've got proof of where your mattress went. Under householder duty of care that document matters: if your waste ends up dumped and it can be traced back to you, you're the one the council comes to.

Which brings up the obvious one — don't leave a mattress on the pavement or down an alley. Fly-tipping a mattress can land you a fixed penalty notice or, for repeat or larger dumping, prosecution. We spend a fair bit of our week clearing other people's dumped waste off private land, including fly-tipping removal in Coventry, and it's always more expensive to sort out afterwards than it would have been to book a collection.

Every collection is a two-person crew, which is the whole point. A king-size mattress down a narrow Victorian staircase in Moseley, a divan out of a second-floor flat in Selly Oak with no lift, a bunk bed that has to come apart before it'll get through the door in Kings Heath — none of that is your problem. You don't need to drag it outside first, you don't need to bag it, and you don't need to be there for the whole job as long as we can get access.

Book before midday and we're usually with you the same afternoon; after that it's normally next day.
