How does council bulky waste collection work?
Every council in the West Midlands offers a paid bulky-waste collection for large household items the normal bin lorry won't take — sofas, wardrobes, mattresses, white goods. You book online, pay a set fee, put the items out on the agreed morning and the crew collects. Waits are typically one to three weeks depending on the council and time of year.
Each council caps the number of items per booking and publishes a list of what they will and won't take. Prices, item lists and wait times change often — always check your council's current page before booking.

What won't the council take?
- DIY, building or renovation waste (plasterboard, tiles, rubble).
- Loose bagged rubbish — bulky services are for large single items.
- Garden waste in most cases — that's a separate subscription in most councils.
- Hazardous items (paint, oil, asbestos, gas bottles) — take these to a HWRC.
- Items above their published maximum count per booking.

When is the council the better choice?
- You have one or two items on the council's list.
- You can leave them outside on a specific morning up to three weeks away.

When is a private same-day collection the better choice?
- You need it gone today or this week — probate, end-of-tenancy, house sale.
- You have a mixed load: some bulky, some bagged, some DIY.
- You can't leave items on the pavement (blocking access, or a fly-tipping risk).
- The items are inside and need to be carried out — councils lift from the kerb only.
- You want a waste transfer note for your records or your landlord.
