Which household recycling centres serve Birmingham?
Birmingham City Council operates five HWRCs across the city. Between them they cover the whole of B1–B48 plus Sutton Coldfield and Erdington. All five require pre-booking, all five ask for proof of a Birmingham address, and all five require a permit for any van, pickup, trailer or converted vehicle.

Do I need to book a slot?
Yes — all five Birmingham HWRCs operate a booking system. Turning up without a slot usually means being turned away, particularly on weekends. Booking is free and done through Birmingham City Council's website.
Do I need a van permit to use a Birmingham tip?
Yes if you are arriving in a van, pickup, converted car, trailer or any vehicle designed for carrying goods. Birmingham operates a free van permit scheme with an allowance of visits per year. Without a permit you will be turned away at the barrier — even if you booked a slot.
In a standard car with a boot full of household waste, no permit is required beyond the booking.
What can I take to a Birmingham HWRC?
- General household waste, mixed bags and small furniture.
- Garden waste — soil, hedge trimmings, small branches.
- Wood, metal, cardboard, glass and hard plastics.
- Fridges, freezers, TVs and small WEEE.
- Mattresses (usually a separate skip or charge).
- Small amounts of DIY waste — rubble, plasterboard — often chargeable.
Hazardous waste (asbestos, tyres in large numbers, commercial waste) is not accepted at HWRCs and needs a specialist licensed carrier.
When does a collection beat a tip run?
A tip run makes sense for a car boot's worth of clean waste when you already have the time and no rush. It stops making sense once you're renting a van, applying for permits and making multiple trips. Roughly:
- Half a van of mixed household — a same-day collection from £60–£90 is usually cheaper than a rented van + fuel + permit + a day of your time.
- Heavy furniture on a top floor — you don't want to be the person carrying it down.
- End-of-tenancy or house sale deadlines — waiting for a booking slot isn't an option.
- Any load that includes items HWRCs won't take (commercial, hazardous, more than the daily DIY limit).
