When should Birmingham students book their move?
Most University of Birmingham, BCU and Aston tenancies end on 30 June or 1 July. That last week of June and first week of July is by a distance the busiest van period in Selly Oak, Edgbaston, Bournbrook and Harborne. If you can move a week earlier or later, you'll pay less and pick from more slots — book 2–4 weeks ahead if you have to move on peak dates.
How much does a student move cost in Birmingham?

What about storage between tenancies?
- Most Birmingham student tenancies gap from early July to mid-September.
- Self-storage facilities in Digbeth, Tyseley and Aston take month-to-month bookings — usually £40–£90 a month for a student-sized unit.
- Cheapest option: split a slightly bigger unit with two housemates.
- Book the drop-off and the collection with the same man-and-van team — cheaper than arranging both separately.
How can housemates split a van cost fairly?
- Simplest: equal split — everyone chips in the same amount.
- By volume: each housemate pays a share proportional to boxes and furniture.
- By destination: if one person's new address is further, they cover the extra mileage.
- Add £10–£20 each into a moving-day kitty for lunch and any small parking spend.
Selly Oak, Edgbaston and Bournbrook — access notes
Terraced streets around Dawlish Road, Tiverton Road and Heeley Road get very busy on end-of-term Saturdays — often multiple vans on the same street. Booking a mid-week slot solves most access problems. Edgbaston flats near the University tend to have permit parking, so a short-stay dispensation or an agreed load window helps.

What should students not bother moving?
- Cheap flat-pack furniture that won't survive dismantling.
- Half-used food and toiletries — donate to a food bank instead.
- Old textbooks — pass on to next year's cohort or donate.
- Anything you haven't used in the last academic year.
