How do I check a UK waste carrier's licence?
- Ask the collector for their Environment Agency waste carrier registration number — a legitimate carrier will give it without hesitation.
- Go to gov.uk/find-registered-waste-carrier (the Environment Agency's free public register).
- Enter the registration number, or search by company name or postcode.
- Check the company name matches, the registration is 'upper tier' (or 'lower tier' for their own waste only) and the status is current.
- Save or screenshot the record for your files, alongside the waste transfer note they issue after the job.
Different registers exist for Scotland (SEPA), Wales (Natural Resources Wales) and Northern Ireland (NIEA) — the process is the same.
What is a waste transfer note?
A waste transfer note (WTN) is the receipt that describes what waste was collected, when, and where it is going. Every legitimate carrier issues one. Keep it for two years — it is your proof of due diligence if the council ever asks. LV81 emails a WTN with every job.
What are the red flags of an unlicensed rubbish collector?
- Cash-only pricing, no receipt.
- No business name or logo on the vehicle — or a magnetic sign that peels off.
- Quote is dramatically cheaper than anyone else in the area.
- Won't give a registration number, or gives one that doesn't match a real record.
- Won't issue a waste transfer note.
- Door-knocking with a leaflet only — no website, no reviews, no fixed address.
- Pressure to load and leave quickly.
